Molasses Cookies were a staple in my household growing up but it’s been years since I’ve had one. I plan on fixing that this weekend when I’ll be cooking up a batch. I went straight to the source for this recipe. Thanks Mom.
Old Fashioned Molasses Cookies
Summary: These are the classic molasses cookies you probably grew up eating. You could substitute butter in this recipe but it will make for a crispier cookie.
- 3/4 cup shortening (Crisco)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1 egg
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 1/2 tsp. ginger
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- Additional sugar for rolling cookie in before baking
- Preheat oven to 375° F.
- Melt shortening in the microwave and cool. Add sugar, molasses, egg and beat well. Mix dry ingredients together in separate bowl, then add to the shortening mixture. Mix well. Cover bowl and chill in refrigerator for 1 hour. Form in to 1 inch balls and roll in granulated sugar and place on cookie sheet (they will flatten and spread out so give them a little room between).
- Bake at 375° for 10 – 12 minutes.
Number of servings (yield): 2 dozen cookies
