4 Tbsp. flour
4 Tbsp. sugar
2 Tbsp. cocoa powder
2 Tbsp. canola, vegetable or other neutral tasting oil (melted butter works, as well)
2 Tbsp. water
1/4 tsp. vanilla
Tiny pinch of salt
Dump everything into a mug and mix thoroughly (you don’t want any lumpy bits of flour in there). Put the mug in the microwave for about one minute, depending on your microwave (the centre should still be wet when it's done). You'll probably want to let it sit and cool for a minute or two as it's very hot!
If desired, top warm mug brownie with ice cream or whipped cream or whatever it is you enjoy on your brownie.

If you want to tweak your taste experience, here are some variations you might like to try:
Substitute melted butter for the oil.
Substitute powdered (icing) sugar for the granulated sugar.
Substitute milk for the water
And here's an alternate version with a few extra ingredients:
4 Tbsp. flour
4 Tbsp. sugar
2 Tbsp. cocoa powder
1/2 tsp. baking powder
Pinch of salt
1/4 cup chocolate chips
1 Tbsp. vegetable oil
3 Tbsp. water
1/4 tsp. vanilla

Wow. My waist line didn't really need this information! LOL. Great post!

I know, Carrie. I felt the same way. My need for chocolate occurs so often that only the time it takes to make something gets in the way. Now I don't even have that ;)

ooo I can't wait to make this, what a great idea! Perfect quick fix!
Adele on March 10, 2009 12:21 PM
Just made this, it may only be small but I feel like I've eaten a whole cake!! Haha I can't move!! Enjoyable non the less!!
Thanks Jen!!
I know what you mean, Fiona! Glad you liked it :) - Jen

I've had this for a while, and find that i prefer it with one large egg in place of the baking powder. It is light and spongy. I also found that a cereal bowl allows for better mixing than a mug; just make sure it is ceramic or microwave safe!

heehee. I found this after searching for "quick chocolate fix". This was perfect!! I had a small amount of chocolate I really wanted to use, but hardly any flour-what was a girl to do?!
This was amazing. Start to finish in three minutes and now I am full and oh so satisfied.
Very much adding this to my recipe collection! Thanks!

Always happy to help someone get their fix! (Glad I'm not the only one who has these chocolate emergencies :)
Jen on August 16, 2009 6:33 PM
wow, this is amazing!
i put it in for an extra 20 seconds because i didn't want the gooey center, and it worked! it's just like a real brownie!
now i'm going to top it with ice cream (:
yumm.

I've tried a few mug cakes before and didn't care for the results. I'm happy to say this turned out exactly as I hoped. it was dense, rich, but not -too- sweet. We used the recipe without the baking powder and used whey in place of water. We cooked it for one minute and the center was tasty too. The only thing I'd do differently is next time is take your suggestion and use powdered sugar instead of granulated. Mine gave it a somewhat grainy texture but it was still very good!
Thanks for the recipe!

Like LabPixie, I did a search for "quick chocolate fix" and found this recipe and your great blog!
I'm eating my chocolate cake and it's delicious!

Soooo nice!
Morgan on January 26, 2011 5:20 PM
Agree, Morgan! My daughter is addicted to these mug brownies. She's even memorized the ingredients :)
Jen on January 26, 2011 7:42 PM
So delicious. Thank you for sharing.
Elle on March 19, 2011 8:58 PM
This was perfect. So many variations possible for the future!! I think I would want it a little denser (it was more like cake for me), so maybe less baking powder... But it's much better than the 'cake in a mug' recipe. Thanks for sharing! :)

Another one in the "quick chocolate fix" search crowd here- glad I'm not the only junkie out there. LOL
I just finished eating my first brownie in a mug. I made the 'more ingredients' version because I happened to have an open package of chocolate chips. I had to hurry back here and say Thank you for this recipe, it really is very good! It will take a lot of willpower not to make it every night when those latnight munchies hit. ;)

Glad you all are enjoying! Thanks for your coming back and sharing. I knew I wasn't the only one ;)
Jen on April 4, 2011 8:04 AM
Ha - I also stumbled across this recipe by typing 'quick chocolate fix' into google. This was perfect - exactly what I was craving! I'm a sucker for raw batter occasionally too, and this one is great since there's no eggs. Thanks for posting!
Sara on May 21, 2011 8:01 PM
Glad you enjoyed it, Sara. I'm a batter girl myself even if there is egg in it. I like to live dangerously ;)
Jen on May 21, 2011 8:28 PM
Great recipe! Just a warning for others - DO NOT try to make this recipe "healthier" by substituting Splenda for sugar . . . it doesn't work. It makes the cake super dense and slightly bitter.
Kristen on May 26, 2011 2:57 PM
Yummy! Just what I was craving - thanks!
Laurie Larson on July 29, 2011 11:14 PM
