It's been a while since I've had to write a research paper, but if I had to, I'd be all over this extension! Research Buddy Firefox Extension.
Speaking of Firefox Extensions, here a a few of my current favourites:
Edit CSS - for Firefox and Thunderbird.
ColorZilla
Minimize to Tray
Forecast Fox (formerly WeatherFox)

A couple of nice new Firebird/Mozilla Extensions
Firefox Extensions
Update 01 13 04: Charles has posted a nice write-up of getting the spellchecker working in Firebird here, so head on over there and install this. It's a great addition to Firebird! Thanks Charles.
The Firebird extension I've been waiting for! Spellchecker Extension. It's in early development but it works nicely. There is a thread at the Mozillazine Forums that you can refer to, or follow the link above for a good "how-to".
Spellchecker will work in any text entry box. Access via the right click context menu.
And via Mozillazine, the Launchy Extension, for Mozilla and Firebird, which also adds options to the right click context menu to open up links in a number of other applications.

Cute Menus for Firebird
Firefox Extensions
The context menus in Firebird never bothered me . . . until I saw how they looked with Cute Menus! Now available in v0.2. Supports Firebird and I think Mozilla now, as well. The default install uses the Qute icons. There are a number of other people working on alternate themes. See this thread on Mozillazine Forums.

Spoofing IE in Firebird
Firefox Extensions
Things that make me go "HAH!" . . . Nothing drives me crazier than surfing along very happily with Firebird and then coming across a site that doesn't display properly in Firebird (a "made for IE" design). There are a couple of blogs that I read that are virtually unreadable in Firebird. Needless to say, I haven't actually "read" them in awhile. (Interestingly, both of them use Linkware templates, but don't get me started on "designers" that don't test cross-browser ;) In any event, today I found this thread on the Firebird forums. Note particularly the 11th entry in the thread from "Mike", who offers a link, bookmarklet code and instructions on how to Spoof IE in Firebird. Using FireBird on IE only sites?? - MozillaZine Forums. I've had a go with it and the aforementioned, formerly mangled blogs now display properly in Firebird with a simple click on the bookmarklet. HAH!
P.S. If I understand correctly how this works, it doesn't "fake" IE in Firebird (like User Agent Switching), it actually IS IE, just displayed within Firebird.
Added later: I just came across this new Extension for Mozilla/Firebird - "View in IE" which adds an item to the context menu to view the page in IE. This extension will actually fire up IE browser and display the current page in that browser as opposed to the first option which will display within Firebird.

Edit CSS for Mozilla Firebird
Firefox Extensions
If you love the Edit Style Bookmarklet and you're a Mozilla Firebird user, then go grab the new Edit CSS Extension. Works just like the bookmarklet (which lets you modify the currently loaded page's styles), except the style sheet opens in a sidebar. Nice!

Aggreg8
Firefox Extensions
If you are a Mozilla/Phoenix user, you might be interested in Aggreg8. Just out as a .1 release, Aggreg8 is an RSS Aggregator that integrates into the Moz/Phoenix browser. While features are limited in this release, I love the idea of browser integration. Right now, the program features are limited. It only shows post excerpts right now but it does allow for subscriptions to be categorized. Even at .1, it's a handy way to check quickly on a number of reads without opening another program.
