Movable Type moderated comments notifications

Movable Type Tips

If you're running MT 3.14 and you're wondering why you aren't getting email notifications of pending comments under comment moderation, you'll find some solutions in this thread - movabletype.org : Support Forum. Hopefully, it will save you from going through what I just went through trying to figure what the problem was. I opted for removing the couple lines from the Comment.pm file and all is well with the world again. (Except for restoring the rest of the templates I trashed during the debugging process ;)

Installing Movable Type locally on Windows XP

Movable Type Tips

I just set up a local install of Movable Type. I had previously done so using phpdev. I think I fluked my way into making it work. I'm unix challenged ;) After a recent computer format, I tried to install phpdev again and, for some reason, I just couldn't get it to work.

I stumbled on EasyPHP yesterday though and decided to use it to give a local MT install another go. It was so easy, I thought I'd take a minute to write up some basic instructions while it was still fresh in my mind. I can't guarantee results on your machine, but these steps worked for me on Windows XP, SP1. All the steps are listed in the Extended Entry.

As a side note, if you're interested in just setting up a local server on WinXP to learn and test php, EasyPHP is a dead simple and painless way to do it!

My main focus though was to set up a local testing install of Movable Type, so these instructions are with that goal in mind. If you have interests beyond just running MT locally, have a look at phpdev, XAMPP (as suggested by Achim) or Aprelium's Abyss Web Server X1 (as suggested by Nicholas) for more comprehensive options.

The end result of these install instructions is a local MT install using a Berkeley or mysql Database, with a user-friendly interface.

If you notice anything unclear or missing from the instructions, let me know and I'll add or clarify.

Movable Type Tips

Spam Wait for Movable Type Comment Spam, by John Wehr - a new option in the fight against comment spam. From their site ... "These files will make it necessary for a person or robot to wait fifteen seconds after accessing a comment form to post a comment. As humans generally take time to read an entry and write a comment, this should be unnoticeable. Hypothetically it should prevent most simple comment spam bots from functioning properly."

Full Posts + Comments RSS Template for Movable Type

Movable Type Tips

I've posted my template for a Movable Type RSS Feed which includes the full posts plus the comments. The code below would replace the code for the RSS 2.0 template I quoted in my previous post (if you want this feature.) On my own blog, I made the full posts + comments feed the default (the index.xml one) and I made another index template called RSS 2.0 Posts Only with an output file of postsonly.xml and put the original RSS 2.0 template in it. On my blog's index page, I provided this alternate link for anyone who didn't want the comments with their feed.

Skinable smilies and icons

Movable Type Tips

I saw this on the MT Forum today in a post that was a couple of months old (not sure how I missed it!). Skinable smilies [Click link for English Version at top and then scroll down] is a very neat idea even if you don't skin your site. The smilies are transparent gifs with the background color controlled by CSS to match your site (or your various skins.) He has also just come out with the same idea for Skinable Navigation Icons. [Can't find an English version for this but same principle as the smilies - download the zip with the images and use CSS similar to the smilies example.]

I might have to try this. I've never really been a smilie person, although if anyone reads my blog, they know I use a lot of the old-fashioned kind! ;)

Rebuild Options

Movable Type Tips

I have been using Movable Type for over 10 months now and I just learned something new this week that I can't believe I didn't know before this. So I thought I'd share in the event there is anyone else who totally missed this fine point.

When I finish editing a template, I click to save it. Then, I always used the "Rebuild" link at the top of the page (mainly because the page resets itself after the save and the Rebuild link at the top is the visible one.) From that link, the only options are to rebuild all, all index, all individual etc.

For some reason, this week, I clicked the Rebuild button underneath the template screen (next to the save button), only to discover that this link provides the option of only rebuilding the precise page I have just finished editing. Not only that ... when it's done, it offers up a link to the particular page as well (very handy when the editing was done on an internal page!).

I can't believe I didn't find this out earlier. I could have saved much time and many rebuild resources.

Exporting Scripts to Template Modules

Movable Type Tips

I was reading this article tonight and also remembering someone (mcroft?) mentioning that they included scripts in their blog pages by modules, and it all got me to thinking that this sounds like a really good idea (in the same vein as moving CSS to an external pages, for efficiency and bandwidth savings.)

Presumably, it would be done by creating a new Template module, copying any common scripts (popup, trackback, expanding entries) into this new module, setting the output file of the module to something like common.js and then pulling that file into the blog pages with <script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript" src="/common.js"></script> in the HEAD section.

Sound right?

Drop Down Category Listings

Movable Type Tips

[Source] Mcroft shares code for putting category listings in a drop down box (about half-way down the page). I'm assuming the first part of the code goes in the HEAD section with the MT scripts and the second part goes where the drop-down menu should appear on the page. I'll have to test that out!

Added later: Tested it out and it is quick and easy. The first part of the code should go in the HEAD section, in between the <script> </script> tags The second part can just be pasted into your index template where you want the drop-down menu to appear. It could easily be used for recent entries or archives, by switching the MT Tags in the code to the appropriate ones.

Added later, later: Loopy provides this alternative, from Pete Bevin. I'll check that out as well, loopy! Thanks.

Putting a thumbnail in your entry

Movable Type Tips

samplepic.jpgThis code shows how to use CSS to embed a thumbnail picture in your entry, while having the text wrap around it. This example shows the basic thumb. It can also be clickable and pop-up to a larger photo by uploading the photo, creating a thumbnail and chosing "Pop up image" instead of "Embed Image". The code in the image tag is setting the thumbnail to float to the left (it could also be set to float to the right side instead.) It's also setting a margin for the thumbnail, so that there will be some space between the picture and the text. The margin setting will put 13px to the right of the photo and 5px on the bottom, 4px at the top and 0px to the left. An easy way to remember how the margin settings work, is to picture moving around a clock. The first one is 12 o-clock (top), then 3 o-clock (right), 6 o-clock (bottom) and finally 9 o-clock (right).
