19 Top Font Combinations

If you only have time to read one article today, this is the one I would recommend! I haven't seen a lot of articles on the subject of combining fonts effectively and this one is done really well. Definitely worth a read.
I followed the golden rule of font combinations, which is simply to combine a serif and a sans serif to give “contrast” and not “concord”. The farther apart the typeface styles are, as a guideline, the more luck you’ll have. Fonts that are too similar look bad. Set a line of Times Roman over Garamond and you’ll see what I mean. I chose the simple model of a bold headline font and normal weight body font. All the font combinations got the same “lorem” text.

Cufon Font Replacement
Cufón aims to become a "worthy alternative to sIFR, which despite its merits still remains painfully tricky to set up and use." How cufon is different ...
• No plug-ins required – it can only use features natively supported by the client
• Compatibility – it has to work on every major browser on the market
• Ease of use – no or near-zero configuration needed for standard use cases
• Speed – it has to be fast, even for sufficiently large amounts of text
Cufón consists of two individual parts – a font generator, which converts fonts to a proprietary format and a rendering engine written in JavaScript.

ddfont: all the fonts you'll ever want
Download fonts | ddfont.com - all the fonts you'll ever want. - a nice new (to me) font site.
I like that all the fonts appear under each letter of the alphabet on one page (it gets tiring clicking through pages on font sites), BUT, the load time of the page is a bit long with all those images. Categorization by font type is also missing, which makes it hard to find a particular type of font. That said though, a nice site for font browsing.

The article outlines the three things to look for in making the right font choice for your project.

Getting Started with sIFR
Dynamic text replacement - .net magazine walks through how easy it is to implement rich text fonts into your web pages using sIFR, giving headings and pullquotes a professional look.
I've experimented with sIFR before and it really is a great web design tool to break away from the core fonts for things like headings and quotes. The biggest obstacle for me however, was that I don't have Flash, so creating the Flash font was a bit problematic. That was until I discovered the sIRF Font Embedder program, which will convert any TTF font into a SWF Flash file for use with sIFR. (Requires .NET 2.0).
Although the sIFR Font Embedder is alpha sofware, it worked great for me and is the perfect solution for the Flash-less who want to work with sIFR.

Great Fonts for Web 2.0 takes a look at the font choices of some popular web 2.0 sites. I tend to think of web 2.0 fonts as being clean, sans serif fonts, but the 9 sites highlighted in this article show that isn't the case. Nice article.
