Cross Process and Redscale Effects in Photoshop

crossproc.png

I have really been enjoying photography site Epic Edits, not only for it's photography tips but for tutorials on how to achieve certain image effects in Photoshop. Their latest is a nice how-to produce Cross Process and Redscale effects.

I gotta hand it to the film guys, they sure know how to have a good time. I’m fascinated by the many methods and techniques they can use to produce some very interesting images, all of which are only possible with film. As digital photographers, we can only try to mimic what they can do in hopes that our work will turn out half as interesting. Here are a couple of my favorite film photography techniques that can be (sort of) reproduced with Photoshop.

Bernie's Better Beginners Guide to Photography

Bernie's Better Beginner's Guide to Photography

Most authors of photography guides are experienced professionals, and speak with the authority of the published photographer. Instead I write this beginner's guide with the authority of a beginner. I flatter myself that I am better placed to advise the beginner geek on how to learn to use a camera than the professional photographer is: I have just been a beginner myself, so what was confusing and what was simple is fresh in my mind.

An excellent beginners guide and definitely worth a read for new photographers or those who feel they still have something to learn.

Create Realistic Film Grain for Digital Photography with Photoshop

grain2.png

Realistic film grain for digital photograpy - a tutorial

For a very long time I've been looking for a way to create realistic looking film grain on digital photos. As much as I love digital photography I've always missed the magnificent atmospheric film grain you get when shooting on Kodak Tri-X 400 film. I've looked into several plugins but didn't find anything that's really worth the money. Today I was fiddling with some pictures I took on a photoshoot with a band and all of a sudden I found a way to do it!

The results are great (see sample photo in the article) and it's achieved with just a few steps in Photoshop. Nice!

PhotoWalkthrough.com: learning digital photography with video and audio tutorials

photowalkthrough.png

If you've been looking for a site that will help you learn digital photography post-processing, then it's certainly worth looking at PhotoWalkthrough.com PhotoWalkthrough offers free video tutorial podcast covering digital photography post processing using adobe photoshop cs2.

"This site should focus not just on the mechanics of how an image was produced but also explain the mental process of the artist. It should explain why they made the decisions they did - even if it was just "because it looked nice". I hope that a typical visitor here will already be comfortable with the process of shooting a photograph and getting it onto their PC but they might be interested in the more artistic elements of the process such as how to look at a photograph and tell if it's a keeper. Or how to look at a photograph and see within it a crop or processing technique that will make it stand out."

The site will start with a photo and walkthough the post-processing process in a series of video tutorials (Quicktime). In addition, PhotoWalkthrough features tips and tricks posts and rss feeds of either the full-sized or an ipod sized videos.

PhotoWalkthrough is part of the Photocast Network, which is another great photography resource. It features it's own photography related podcasts, with input from around the photography podcast/photocast world. Check out the Podcasts blogroll for links to more great sites.

Getting Started with HDR Photography

hdrhow.png

HDR or High Dynamic Range photography is one of the hottest new imaging trends. If you (like me) have been interested in getting started with creating HDR images, here are some resources I've found.

Demystifying exposure: interactive audio tutorials for digital photography

fotofundamentals.pnga shot apart: tutorials presents a whole series of digital photography lessons in audio/interactive form (mp3).

This series looks at "Demystifying Exposure" and consists of seven parts, each anywhere from 2 to 6 MB in size, that will walk through the various aspects of exposure. From the site ...

• We'll talk about what it is, understand how it works
• Demystify a lot of the terms and vocab
• Understand how to control and utilize aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to your advantage
• Learning exposure will help any photographer in any context, from artistic photo shoots to casual vacation photos
• Learn by experimentation, not passive reading. The audio guides you along as you adjust your camera and go on little mini shoots

Note that these are intended to be interactive, so we would presumably look up the mp3 on our ipod to listen to while getting out with our camera and following along by doing. An great idea and worth checking out.

Turn your camera upside down for more flattering portraits

Well that's a tip I've never heard before! Turn Your Digital Camera Upside Down For Better Portraits - Digital Camera University suggests that "believe it or not by turning your camera upside down impacts how the light from the flash illuminates your subject. Most people have circles under their eyes and when you turn your camera upside down the flash hits the skin at a different angle and helps diminish the circles and makes them look younger."

The author admits that the effect of this trick is subtle but I do think it does show a nicer light on the subject in the example photos in the article. What I want to know though is how easy it is to actually take a picture with the camera upside down? I guess I'll have to try it to find out!

Photography: Rules of Composition

Lost in Bluedom has a great photography article on composing your photos. The Rules of Composition - looks at the classic "rule of thirds", as well as other things to consider when framing up that photo.

Some composition rules I find make a big difference are: getting really close or shooting really wide. Either/or. Often (although not always) the in-between area lacks impact; trying to shoot from higher up (on a stool) or from lower down (lay on the ground); make sure you have a "subject" before you shoot and think about ways to highlight that subject with framing. And if all else fails, remember you have a second chance to get it right by doing a bit of cropping in the digital darkroom!

IMHO, composition is where it's at for anyone looking to improve their photos. Beyond the camera model, the f-stop or ISO, if the composition is lacking, the photo will often fail.

Here are some more resources for photographic "rules of composition".
