Snapper Extension Updated for Firefox 3
I was always a fan of the Snapper Firefox extension for quickly grabbing bits of screens for use in blog posts. Sadly, it wasn't updated and I couldn't hack it to work with Firefox 3. Good news! The author has finally updated it.
The Snapper extension for Firefox 3 is available for now, from the Firefox Add-ons Sandbox (requires free registration to install). I've tried it and it works great, although, having used an alternative program the past while, I find I'm really missing knowing the dimensions of the screen bit I'm grabbing. Would be a nice add-on for this handy extension.

A few noteworthy Firefox Extensions (Add-ons)
I've posted about this extension before but I think it deserves a second recommendation. This extension really does make Firefox's Live Bookmarks much more effecient. LiveClick :: Firefox Add-ons
Live Bookmarks are one of Firefox's best features, but they're missing a way to quickly access a Live Bookmark's home page without having to create an additional bookmark, go through lots of extra clicks, or type in the address manually. LiveClick fixes this oversight. All you have to do is specify a location in the Live Bookmark's properties. Then, whenever you click the livemark (or the 'Open Location' popup menu item), your livemark will behave like an actual, clickable bookmark.
Another enhancement to Firefox Live Bookmarks is offered by the Feed Sidebar Extension.
The Feed Sidebar is an extension for the Mozilla Firefox Web browser that displays the new items from your Live Bookmarks in the sidebar. It is intended to be a lightweight extension of the RSS capabilities already included in Firefox, not a completely new feed management system. The Feed Sidebar also features a handy "preview" window so you can see the first paragraph or so of the feed item before making the leap.
Finally, the wfx_Verions Firefox extension caught my eye. This extension will automatically check for software updates for you, saving lots of time.
"Every day I check on many different websites if there's a new version of my favorite programs available for download. So I decided to create this extension which groups the pages you want to monitor in Firefox"

Morning Coffee Firefox Extension
Morning Coffee | Firefox Add-ons keeps track of daily routine websites and opens them in tabs for you. But there's more. "This extension lets you organize websites by day and open them up simultaneously as part of your daily routine. This is really handy if you read sites that update on a regular schedule (like webcomics, weekly columns, etc.). "
Morning Coffee is best suited for including or excluding sites that update on a regular (predictable) schedule. Or perhaps you open a different set of tabs in the morning Monday-Friday (work related) than on the weekend. If you are someone who regularly reads sites like this, the Morning Coffee extension would be a very handy add-on.
Of course, if you (like me) just open the same 5 or 6 tabs first thing every morning, you can use Firefox to do this easily without any additional extensions. Here's how ...
1) Open up all the sites you'd like to open at once in your browser.
2) Right click on any tab and select "Bookmark All Tabs"
3) In the popup, give your new folder a name (I use "Start Up") and place it where you'd like to store it in the Bookmarks drop down (I put mine right on the Bookmarks Toolbar so I can easily drag and drop new links onto it that I might decide I want to check out every morning).
4) Once your "Start up" bookmark folder is set up, simply click on the folder and select "Open All in Tabs".
If you wanted to, you could extend this to make a bunch of folders to quickly open up a number of tabs for a variety of subjects. Then you could group all these "quick open" folders under one master folder on your bookmark toolbar or in your bookmarks.
AutoSlideshow Firefox Extension
AutoSlideshow | Firefox Add-ons | Mozilla Corporation "allows you to view slideshows of images of web pages or images linked to from web pages. This is mainly useful for viewing images of a page with no possibility for image browsing.
Beside the slideshow it is possible to browse the images one by one using back and forward buttons. Additionally you can save all detected images on disk."
Note that this only works with images or image links that are coded up with pure html. The extension offers special support for sites like flickr, wikipedia, google, facebook etc.
Window Resizer Firefox Extension
Window Resizer | Firefox Add-ons - resize your browser window to various standard sizes for web design testing. Supports sizing from 640x480 all the way through 1600x1200 via the context menu, tool menu or a toolbar button.
Comments indicate there may be a few bugs in the 1024x768 display but looks like a promising and handy tool for web designers.
Snapper Firefox Extension (Updated for Firefox 2.0): easily capture a portion of any page
Snapper is one of those "must-have" Firefox extensions, for me. It sits in the status bar and when clicked I can slice out any portion of any page that I want as an image. It's what I use for all the images on this site.
Note: The file below will not work with Firefox 3. My simple hack was not enough to get it to work in Firefox 3. Obviously something else has changed that is breaking it and I'm not familiar enough with the inner workings of extension to fix it. For Firefox 3 users, I suggest the Screengrab Firefox extension or the Dashblog Firefox Extension for similar functionality.
I was reminded tonight though, as I upgraded to Firefox 2.0.0.2 , that Snapper still hasn't been updated and is only compatible up to Firefox 1.5. So, since I hacked* the extension to work with Firefox 2.*, I thought I would share it for anyone else wanting to use it. Download Snapper for Firefox 2.0+ then install from within Firefox by selecting File menu > Open File and selecting the snapper xpi file you downloaded.
* I just upped the max version to 3.0. Tested and working fine in Firefox 2.0.0.2
New and improved del.icio.us extension for Firefox

The main complaint about the previous incarnation of the del.icio.us extension for Firefox was that to use it, users had to choose between Firefox bookmarks or del.icio.us bookmarks in their browser. This new version allows the user to keep both. This new version also promises some updates such as improved compatibility with Foxmarks. Looks like this could be the del.icio.us Firefox extension we've been waiting for!
"This is a major update that restores the Firefox Bookmarks and Toolbar to the del.icio.us extension. Compatibility with other extensions (such as Foxmarks) should be greatly improved, and users will now have the ability to show or hide the original Bookmarks menu and Bookmark toolbar."

OpenSearchFox: Firefox add-on to easily add sites to Firefox Search Box
I think most Firefox users know that you can add search plugins to the Firefox browser's search dropdown through mycroft, specifically. Unfortunately, the mycroft site is often slow and difficult to get around. And then, maybe the site you want to add a search plugin for isn't there. Frustrating.
Enter OpenSearchFox | Firefox Add-ons a fabulous new Firefox extension that will add a search plugin for ANY site that has a search box. Here's how it works.
After you install the OpenSearchFox add-on, you visit a site that has a search box. Right click in the search textarea and you'll see "Add OpenSearch plugin" in your menu.

Select that option and then you'll be presented with a very simple details popup, where you can edit the name that appears in the search dropdown and the site description and then you're done. The site is now added to Firefox's search dropdown menu. How cool is that?!
One thing to note however is that OpenSearchFox will not work on search boxes that are enhanced with some ajaxy, scripty stuff (such as the search box at the top of THIS site). All is not lost here though as I have added OpenSearch functionality to this site myself. If you check the search drop down box in Firefox 2 or IE7, you will see "Add etc. quick links" there and you can hook up search for this site easily, to use even when you're not on my site.
If you want to do this for your own site, here are a couple of resources to get your started. You'll find instructions in the article "Add OpenSearch to your site in 5 minutes" that are quick and easy to follow and will set up a site search that uses Google to provide the site-specific search results. Just a quick note for anyone who tries the instructions in this article, when I tried it out, I had an issue with the quotation marks and line breaks as copied from the code samples provided. If the new xml file you create is throwing errors, try re-typing the quotation marks in the Url line and removing the line break in that line as well. Should work fine then.
If you use blog or other site software that has it's own search functionality, you might want to check out this article at Boagworld "Add your search engine to your browser", which shows how to add OpenSearch to a Movable Type powered blog, with suggestions on how to adapt for others. One note, this apparently doesn't work with WordPress due to how it's search works.
As I use Movable Type, I opted for the second option and my OpenSearch site search plugin will return search results with MT's search tool.
LiveClick Firefox Add-on: enhance your Live Bookmarks
LiveClick | Firefox Add-ons adds some great functionality to Firefox's Live Bookmarks.
First, it adds a couple of menu items to the Live Bookmark popout - Open Location (open the index page of the site), View Feed and Mark All Items Read.
Secondly, LiveClick allows you to mark Live Bookmark items as "Read".
Thirdly, it integrates a notification systems that will pop up alerts when a Live Bookmark feed gets a new item.
And more ... Use favicons in place of the default RSS icon and you can preview a site's feed by right-clicking the RSS icon in the address bar.
I've been using this for a couple of days and I can highly recommend this as an excellent add-on for anyone who is using Live Bookmarks.
Once installed,

10 Useful Firefox Extensions that don't get glamorized
Update: 10 Useful Firefox Extensions That Don't Get Glamorised features some really great Firefox Add-ons that, in most cases, are the ones that do one simple thing to make our browsing life easier and more productive. Worth a read in case there's one in there you hadn't heard of!
Sxipper: Password Utility for Firefox

"Sxipper makes using the web more convenient and safe. A free Firefox plug-in, Sxipper saves you time by keeping track of all of your user IDs, passwords, and personal data. With a single click, Sxipper is trained to securely log you in."
If you're having trouble remembering all your site passwords, Sxipper looks like a very useful tool and with a Firefox plugin, even handier. Sxipper is OpenID ready and encrypts personal data and stores it on your own computer.
Google Reader Notifier Firefox Add-On
If you're a Google Reader user, there is a new Firefox extension you might be interested in. The Google Reader Notifier | Firefox Add-ons will popup "unread" Google Reader items from the statusbar, so you can keep on top of your feeds.
I have to admit that I thought twice before installing this - wondering whether I wanted to be reminded of what I hadn't read yet but concluded that if I could keep an eye on the unread feed count, I could try to get them read before the number became daunting when I wasn't looking!
Fission Firefox Add-on combines the address bar and progress bar
Fission | Firefox Add-on combines address bar and progress bar, making the progress bar more visible and allowing for a nice visual effect.
If you install Fission and want to tweak the styling, you can refer to this forum thread for information on how to do it.
FaviconizeTag: Firefox Add-on
FaviconizeTab | Firefox Add-ons "This extension adds a new "FaviconizeTab" option to the context menu of the tab. When it is clicked, The width of the tab becomes small up to the size of favicon. It returns to the former size when "FaviconizeTab" is clicked again."
The downside of this extension is that it will hose the close button on the tabs, which despite wondering why I needed it when I first saw it, I have come to use with great regularity! On the plus side though, minimizing the tab width should minimize the need for that tab scrolling thing, which I'm really not too sure I like.
Greasemonkey script will replace last.fm's pink with blue (mostly)
Userscripts.org: Last.fm Blue Theme will replace most of the last.fm and replace it with a nice blue. The script doesn't banish all the pink though. A bit will stick around on the home page and a few headlines here and there. But, if the pink is burning your eyes, you'll surely find this script a big help.

The Email This! Firefox Add-on adds the ability to quickly email any selected text.
Once installed, Email This! adds 3 buttons that can be added to your navigation toolbar - Gmail this! Yahoo this! and a generic Email this! Once you select some text on a page, clicking on the toolbar button will open up the respective email client, add the selected text to the body, insert the page url at the end of the text insert and add the page title as the email's subject.
Quick browser window size testing with Firefox bookmarks
Anyone who has ever designed a website has probably spent some time testing the design at different browser window sizes. There are a lot of tools out there to do this easily - resizing bookmarklets and the popular Web Developer Toolbar. These are both good options but I think there is an even easier way using the handy bookmark keywords in Firefox 2.0. Here's how to set it up.
Go to Firefox Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Select "New Bookmark" from the top menu.
Name the New Bookmark "Resize to 800 x 600"
In the Location box, enter javascript:resizeTo(800, 600);
In the Keyword box, enter 800
Give the bookmark a description if you like.

Now, to quickly and easily resize your browser window to 800 x 600, you simply need to type "800" (without the quotes, of course) in your browser address bar and hit enter (or Go button).
Repeat for other browser window sizes but simply changing the dimensions in the bit of javascript code for the location box and assigning a new corresponding keyword (such as 1024 for resizing to 1024 x 768).
It's worth noting of course, that none of these will work if you have set your advanced JavaScript properties in your Firefox Options to prevent scripts from moving or resizing the window.
Uppity: Firefox Add-on to easily navigate up one directory level
Way back in the early days of Firefox, there was an extension that featured the ability to click and navigate up a directory level from any page. I loved it. I find myself often wanting to navigate up from a page a land on, maybe just out of curiosity to see more of the site, or because the page I landed on wasn't what I was looking for. Unfortunately, that old extension (I've long since forgotten the name) was not updated as Firefox progressed and it fell by the wayside.
Enter Uppity | Firefox Add-ons. From any page, Uppity will navigate up one directory level, starting with removing a page anchor, if that's where you are, then will remove any querystring, then up again to the directory containing the file and then up to the next directory - with each click.
Note that once installed, you will need to manually add the Uppity button to your toolbar. Then just click to navigate up.
Googlepedia Firefox Add-on
Googlepedia | Firefox Add-ons shows you a relevant Wikipedia article alongside your Google search results. Clicking on links in the Wikipedia article will trigger new Google searches.
More features: Links images directly to their full-sized versions; removes Google AdWords; can be expanded to take the full width of the page; and a "hide" button to disable Googlepedia when you don't want it's functionality.
Gmail and Google Reader together on one page with Greasemonkey
A couple of weeks back, I posted a link to a Greasemonkey script that integrates Gmail and Google Reader. As exciting as the prospect of Gmail and Google Reader together was, the script was a bit lacking in the functionality that many were looking for. Enter a new contender The Next Phase - Greasemonkey Script: Gmail and Reader Integrator and I say, this one's got it right!
* Spilt-window view of Gmail and Reader on a single page
* Links to collapse|expand either Gmail or Reader
* Integrated Reader uses start-page as specified in Reader’s “Settings”
* Labels selector
* Key ‘v’ to open Reader links in a new Window
* Automatic resize of Gmail and Reader views
This is definitely worth a look if you're both a Gmail and Google Reader user. Be sure to disable the previous Greasemonkey script before trying this one though, if you have in enabled.

Updated and now compatible with Firefox 2.0.
Tabs Open Relative Firefox Add-on
I think the best Firefox extensions are those that fix the small things that tend to annoy on a daily basis. Tabs Open Relative | Firefox Add-ons | Mozilla Corporation is such a tool.
If you surf with lots of tabs open all the time and you've ever clicked on one or more links on a page, only to discover that you have to scroll all the way to the end of the tab bar (past all your other open tabs) to view it and this bugs you, then this extension is for you. Tabs Open Relative will open up those tabs right next to the current tab.
For example if you have three tabs open, {A}, {B} and {C}, where the current tab is {B}, and then you open three more tabs, {1}, {2} and {3}, you'll get:
{A} {B} {1} {2} {3} {C}
Now that's handy!
Getting started with user styles
If you're not yet familiar with user styles, you're really missing out on a great opportunity to have the web your way!

FireTune
FireTune is not a Firefox extension but rather a downloadable program that "tunes" Firefox depending on your computer/internet connection. You simply tell FireTune what your setup is ie: Fast Computer/Fast Connection and FireTune makes adjustments to your Firefox settings accordingly.
Note that FireTune doesn't change any core Firefox code. It works by making adjustments to browser settings - browser settings that you can view via about:config and could tweak yourself manually. FireTune just takes the best settings for different configurations and does the tweaking for you, all within a nice and user-friendly interface. Whatever adjustments are done by FireTune can be quickly and easily undone (reverts Firefox to back to default settings).
FireTune has just been updated to be fully compatible with the just released soon to be released Firefox v2.0.

Drag de Go Firefox Extension
Drag de Go :: Firefox Extension is one of those extensions I didn't think I needed until I tried it and wondered how I surfed without it!
Simply put, once installed, Drag de Go sets up some (customizable) mouse gestures that will perform certain functions depending on the direction you click and drag and drop selected text, a link or an image.
For example, if you click, drag and drop a link in an upwards direction, it will perform a Google Search with that text. Drag down and a Save As option will appear. Drag and drop right and the Find Tool is activated with that text.
Treatment of links, text and images are each customizable with different actions. And there is more too. Too much to explain fully here!
If you love to surf with mouse gestures, this extension is definitely for you. Even if you're not sure, it's worth an install to play around with and see what it can do.
Drag de Go works with Firefox versions 1.5 - 3.0a1.

A trio of Firefox extensions worth a look
Firefox Showcase provides a new way to manage your Firefox tabs and windows by showing them as thumbnails in a single window, tab or sidebar. (Updated for Firefox 2.0)
Tidy Browser Button allows you to toggle the size of the Firefox browser between the two standard web page sizes on the internet (800 and 1024). This extension is intended to help the user keep their desktop area tidier and more productive - just with one click! This is not a webdev extension to test sites on various browser sizes. This extension is all about the workspace. (Firefox 1.5* or use Nightly Tester tools to make compatible if need be).
How'd I Get Here? I LOVE this extension! If you are a power-surfer and madly opening tabs from links by middle-clicking (guilty!), you'll soon find out that by doing so, you lose the ability to know where it was you came from. If you want to return to that page or want to know what page was the referrer, this extension is for you! Once installed, just click a button on the toolbar to go to the site that first referred you to the current site. (Firefox 1.5*)

Total Validator Extension For Firefox
![]()
Total Valildator Firefox Extension is the first Firefox Extension I've been really excited about in a while. It is a great tool for designers, developers or anyone concerned about validation and accessibility issues.
Once installed, Total Validator adds an icon to your status bar. To use, simply click on the status bar icon for any page you want to check and you will be delivered a very complete report on your page, outlining html validation, broken links, compliance with accessibility guidelines and even screenshots in a wide variety of browsers.
Be sure to check the extensive checking options to set your parameters. Unfortunately, Mac OSX screenshots are only available with the Full Desktop (Paid) version, but screenshots are available for a nice selection of other browsers. About the only thing missing from this tool is CSS validation.
Total Validator is also available as a free desktop tool, for testing local pages as well as a full-featured (paid) desktop tool, which provides OSX screenshots and total site validation options.
I've installed Total Validator and taken it for a test drive. It's a great tool and a worthy install.

Firefox Extensions for Geeks
Macworld: Secrets: Firefox extensions for geeks is yet another list of suggested Firefox extensions, but imo, it's a pretty good one.
I learned about the Cacheout Firefox extension, described as ...
"How many times have you clicked on a link, only to find that the server was down, the page had been removed, or the site was responding too slowly? Cacheout can help you by locating a cached copy of that page (though it may be several days old). If a page doesn’t respond when you click on a link, control-click on it and select Cacheout from the contextual menu. The extension searches for and displays a cached copy of that page."

How to add additional feed readers to Firefox v2.0
I've really been liking Firefox v2.0. All my extensions are working properly, thanks to the Nightly Tester Tools extension. The only thing that was bugging me is the new feed subscription options. See, I use Newsgator Online and it wasn't one of the options for automatic feed subscription. I looked everywhere for some place to add it, with no luck. Annoying.
So today, I decided to look for a solution. And I found it! Here's a link to instructions on how to add addtional feed readers to Firefox 2.0's feed subscription dropdown. Firefox 2.0 Tutorial: Add New RSS Readers or Change the Default Feed Reader (See bottom part of the article for complete instructions).
Note also that once you've added your reader of choice, you can go in to Firefox options (Tools->Options and select Choose Feed Reader from the General tab) to have Firefox automatically subscribe in your new reader of choice.

TrackMeNot Firefox Extension
Hot on the heels of the AOL search history release, comes the TrackMeNot extension for Firefox.
This extension takes a very unique approach to hiding search history. Rather than encrypt or conceal it, TrackMeNot runs in the background sending randomized search queries to popular search engines. The idea is your actual searches get lost in the bunch of random ones. Hiding in plain view.
This extension is in alpha but if you are a Firefox user concerned about search privacy, I suppose might be worth a go. Seems a bit like killing an ant with a hammer though.
Update: see more info at BoingBoing as well, particularly their update.

Firefox Extension to customize your google experience
"CustomizeGoogle is a Firefox extension that enhances Google search results by adding extra information (like links to Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, MSN etc) and removing unwanted information (like ads and spam)".
But the CustomizeGoogle Firefox extension does more than that! You can
• anonymize your Google userid, which is no small feature given the recent AOL search history debacle.
• add links from Google to your bookmark manager.
• use a fixed font for Gmail mail bodies.
• rewrite links to point straight to the images in Google Images.
• hide the Gmail spam counter.
... and more.
Certainly a useful extension for anyone, given that most web users have a lot of daily contact with Google products.

Comparison of Browser Javascript Speed Tests
Javascript Speed Tests for the top browsers (IE6, FIrefox 1.5 and Opera 9), shows that Opera beats everyone else ... easily. Firefox finished at the back of the pack for javascript rendering speed.

Yet Another Top Firefox Extensions for Web Professionals List
13 Great Firefox Extensions for Web Professionals is a pretty good list. I learned about the Codetech Firefox Extension, which is a Dreamweaver-like coding app that will run right in Firefox.
Two Firefox extensions missing from this list though that I would consider essential for Web Professionals are ColorZilla color picker extension (I would be lost without that one!) and of course, the quintessential Web Developer Firefox Extension, which features so many tools in one extension!
Also, some worthy newcomers to consider -
The Total Validator Firefox Extension, with one click, it can validate the html, check accessibility validation, check for broken links, perform a spell check and take a screenshot of the page!

ShortShip Firefox Ebay Extensions
ShortShip - sort eBay search results by total cost Previews & Screenshots - a great Firefox extension add-on for regular ebay users.

A couple of nice new Firebird/Mozilla Extensions
Update 01 13 04: Charles has posted a nice write-up of getting the spellchecker working in Firebird here, so head on over there and install this. It's a great addition to Firebird! Thanks Charles.
The Firebird extension I've been waiting for! Spellchecker Extension. It's in early development but it works nicely. There is a thread at the Mozillazine Forums that you can refer to, or follow the link above for a good "how-to".
Spellchecker will work in any text entry box. Access via the right click context menu.
And via Mozillazine, the Launchy Extension, for Mozilla and Firebird, which also adds options to the right click context menu to open up links in a number of other applications.
Cute Menus for Firebird
The context menus in Firebird never bothered me . . . until I saw how they looked with Cute Menus! Now available in v0.2. Supports Firebird and I think Mozilla now, as well. The default install uses the Qute icons. There are a number of other people working on alternate themes. See this thread on Mozillazine Forums.
Introduction to Mozilla Firebird
Nidelven IT - Introduction to Mozilla Firebird, part 1 (installation). Two new parts added - Extensions and History.
Spoofing IE in Firebird
Things that make me go "HAH!" . . . Nothing drives me crazier than surfing along very happily with Firebird and then coming across a site that doesn't display properly in Firebird (a "made for IE" design). There are a couple of blogs that I read that are virtually unreadable in Firebird. Needless to say, I haven't actually "read" them in awhile. (Interestingly, both of them use Linkware templates, but don't get me started on "designers" that don't test cross-browser ;) In any event, today I found this thread on the Firebird forums. Note particularly the 11th entry in the thread from "Mike", who offers a link, bookmarklet code and instructions on how to Spoof IE in Firebird. Using FireBird on IE only sites?? - MozillaZine Forums. I've had a go with it and the aforementioned, formerly mangled blogs now display properly in Firebird with a simple click on the bookmarklet. HAH!
P.S. If I understand correctly how this works, it doesn't "fake" IE in Firebird (like User Agent Switching), it actually IS IE, just displayed within Firebird.
Added later: I just came across this new Extension for Mozilla/Firebird - "View in IE" which adds an item to the context menu to view the page in IE. This extension will actually fire up IE browser and display the current page in that browser as opposed to the first option which will display within Firebird.
Thundertray 0.6
Thundertray 0.6 Beta - "Thundertray is a tiny application that allows you to launch and minimize the Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client from the Windows system tray." Handy. It would be nice to see this as a Thunderbird Extension.
Edit CSS for Mozilla Firebird

Thunderbird Mail Modified Theme
Modified Qute Theme for Mozilla Thunderbird - with instructions to do it in two minutes or less. And it's very nice!

Aggreg8
If you are a Mozilla/Phoenix user, you might be interested in Aggreg8. Just out as a .1 release, Aggreg8 is an RSS Aggregator that integrates into the Moz/Phoenix browser. While features are limited in this release, I love the idea of browser integration. Right now, the program features are limited. It only shows post excerpts right now but it does allow for subscriptions to be categorized. Even at .1, it's a handy way to check quickly on a number of reads without opening another program.
