There are a number of ways to convert a color photo to black and white in Photoshop - convert to grayscale, simple desaturate or channel mixer. Another method that I haven't seen a lot of "how-to" information about though is using Calculations. I know a number of people consider this the best way to convert to black and white so I was happy to find this tutorial that shows how to do it.

The Calculations Method - Photoshop Tutorials is really well done and walks through the process in good detail, explaining what to look for when making decisions along the way. The resulting photo from the tutorial certainly shows the improvement that can be achieved over grayscale conversion and this Calculations method is one that is worth adding to the Photoshop toolbox to experiment with.

The Contrast Enhancement technique is one that every digital photographer should have in their post-processing toolbox.

The technique involves using the Unsharp Mask Tool (in Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or the GIMP) and does a great job with a lot of photos that are lacking "punch".

The Seamless Border Plugin is handy. It will create a seamless pattern from just about any image. Others offer some kind of wild effects, while there are some basic ones as well.
