Feedable: another new online feed reader option

feedable.png Feedable (beta) has just arrived on the RSS reader scene, billing itself as an easy and fun way to discover, collect and mash up RSS feeds.

With Feedable, you can quickly explore relevant feeds, track feeds in real time, and then drag and drop feeds into playlists. While other RSS feed readers expect you to wade through flat lists of news headlines, Feedable is organized around what really matters: Stories.

Feedable pairs a web-based RSS feed reader with a real-time meme tracker, so the freshest, hottest feeds and stories always rise to the top. Whether you are interested in presidential campaigns, polar bears, Britney Spears, or a rival in your industry, Feedable is a remarkably efficient way to keep tabs on any corner of the blogosphere.

Given the dominance of RSS readers such as Bloglines and Google Reader (and others) it's a tough RSS market for newcomers but for anyone still looking for their "perfect" RSS solution, Feedable is definitely worth a look.

FeedRinse: Filter your RSS Feeds

feedrinse.png

Filter RSS feeds with Feed Rinse "is an easy to use tool that lets you automatically filter out syndicated content that you aren't interested in. It's like a spam filter for your RSS subscriptions."

So how does it work? Let's say you subscribe to a bunch of feeds but you really are only interested in posts about CSS. You can run your entire feed list through opml-supported Feed Rinse, set your keyword search to CSS and get a feed that only includes posts about CSS. FeedRinse supports filtering by keywords, author or tag.

FeedRinse also includes a handy bookmarklet for drag and drop feed addition to your filtered feeds.

For anyone wrangling with a bunch of feeds but looking for only specific information, FeedRinse is a great way to get your feeds focused.

Turn any web page into an rss feed in a second!

feedmaker.png There is nothing more disappointing that finding a really great website and then discovering it doesn't have an RSS Feed. Times have changed and a lot of people just aren't in the habit of manually checking a web site by actually visiting it on a regular basis. It's all about the feeds!

yoktu.com :: feedmaker // turn any web page into an rss feed in a second! and it does a fairly decent job of it. I checked a couple of sites that I knew didn't have a feed and while one of them returned nothing (not sure what that's about), most returned a resulting RSS feed that was quite acceptable.

Worth a look to solve any missing RSS problems.

Feedraider: like making your own personal PopUrls page

feedraider.png I must confess, I saw FeedRaider - Customizable RSS Aggregator in my feeds list a couple of times before I actually clicked on it to see what it was. I thought it was YAFR (yet another feed reader).

In fact, Feed Raider is actually a tool to create your own personal PopUrls-like page ... or two ... or more. Of course, this isn't a totally new idea. I've created a similar set of pages within Netvibes. That said though, there are a couple of features of Feed Raider that appeal to me - premade and css customizable page display themes and alternate feed views.

losttheme.png Feed Raider and especially it's customizable themes is pretty easy on the eye. The fact is, that when trying to cram a lot of information on a page, this matters and I've never been completely comfortable with the look and feel of Netvibes pages when displaying blocks of feed headlines.

Also, Feed Raider offers to feed views - Deck (PopUrls like display) and River, which puts the feeds into one column, sorted by recentness. I like that!

So, I think I'll give Feed Raider a try for a couple of days. If it works out, maybe I'll share my category/feed list set up for others to give a try too.

Feed Icons standardized and updated

Seems the Mozilla FOundation has recently posted usage guidelines for the feed icon, crowning the 28x28 and the 14x14 feed icon as being the canonical (standard) icon sizes. The Feed Icons site has updated accordingly and is now offering both sizes in their download package.

On the New York Times website, they have been using an expanded, two-part feed icon, containing the standard icon, as well as wording (in their case "FEED").

The icon template is available for download as a psd file at
Subtraction: Feeding the Hand That Fed Me, and through the psd, the wording and other file formatting is customizable.
