Cufon Font Replacement

Cufón aims to become a "worthy alternative to sIFR, which despite its merits still remains painfully tricky to set up and use." How cufon is different ...

• No plug-ins required – it can only use features natively supported by the client
• Compatibility – it has to work on every major browser on the market
• Ease of use – no or near-zero configuration needed for standard use cases
• Speed – it has to be fast, even for sufficiently large amounts of text

Cufón consists of two individual parts – a font generator, which converts fonts to a proprietary format and a rendering engine written in JavaScript.

Color and Typography in Good Design

typecolour.png

Another great article from COLOURlovers, Color Design Blog / Color and Typography in Good Design, that looks at how color and typography can combine in web design in good or bad ways (such as the low contrast example image posted above).

Typography is a significant issue for designers. On many projects, finding just the right font, size, spacing, etc. can require considerable time and attention. In addition to typography, color is also a major factor in the success of the design. What is sometimes overlooked is the combination of color and typography and the effect that it has on the overall project.

Typographic Contrast and Flow

textflow.png

Design site Web Designer Wall has a nice article on web typography, in Typographic Contrast and Flow.

... most online readers don’t read line by line, instead they scan (from one point to another). For this reason, designers create typographic contrast and flow by emphasizing certain text. Contrast is important because not all the content within a page have the same value, some have greater significance than the others. By creating contrast, you can direct the reader’s attention to the important messages and at the same time enhance the visual appearance.

Ensuring Your HTML Emails Look Great and Get Delivered

A nice article on Vitamin today - Ensuring your HTML emails look great and get delivered.

With the release of Outlook 2007 earlier this year using the Word rendering engine instead of Internet Explorer, my recommendations just don’t make the cut any more. I’ve decided to revisit my original suggestions and bring them more in line with today’s baseline. I’ve also had a good look at the feedback and comments from the original post. Getting your email to look good is only one piece of the puzzle, so I’ve dedicated the second half of this article to recommendations on how you can improve the chances of your emails actually getting delivered.

As is, the input with the type=”submit” is either too ugly (Firefox), a little buggy (Internet Explorer) or completely inflexible (Safari). The solution for most is to use image inputs and create the damn things ourselves. And it’s unfortunate, because then we’re reduced to the tedious tasks of opening up Photoshop every time we’re in need of a new button. What we need is something better—something more flexible and meant for designers. Lucky for us, the solution already exists and all it needs is a little love. Looking for Money on the Web - Top 10 domain name tips - is a good list of things to think about when thinking about buying a domain. I think the tips are right on.

One caveat though regarding using GoDaddy as a registrar. They are fine. I use them myself. IE7 final released, time to stop procrastinating

ie7.png
The IEBlog announces IEBlog : IE7 for the World and I guess that's my cue to start addressing the reality of IE7 in wide use (yes, I'm seriously guilty of procrastinating on this!).

IE7 final is available for download now on the Microsoft site and according to the IEBlog, will be pushed to users through Automatic Updates a couple of weeks after it is available for download. The IEBlog also helpfully outlines the changes in IE7.

To install IE7 for testing and retaining IE6 for testing, there is are some IE7 standalone solutions here and here.

Of course, once installed, the time comes for addressing rendering issues in IE7, while keeping the site in one piece in IE6 and earlier versions, as well as all the other browsers out there.

The consensus seems to be that Conditional Comments are the way to go. The always useful Position is Everything takes a look at CSS Hacks and IE7 and offers solutions for 'going legit'. If you've been a heavy user of the Star * Hack (guilty!), Wither the Star-HTML hack? is a useful read. And also at PIE, PNG Drop Shadows is a good read for taking advantage of IE7's PNG support.

Some more good reading for IE7 preparedness training ...

Finally, I stumbled across this IE7 Quick Reference cheat sheet, which might be useful for some.
