Hello! Today (or late last night, actually) I unleashed the new design for Food and Whine. I’ve been busy working behind the scenes, moving my entire site from Movable Type to WordPress. While I was at it I decided to re-design it, re-format it and change the name!
Why the name change?
Way back in 2000, this site began as a personal blog (back when they were all the rage). When I got tired of that, I decided to use the site as a place to keep my favourite recipes, so they would be handy. I named the pages “Food and Whine”. At the time, I thought it was cute and clever. As time went on, people started to visit my site (I honestly never envisioned that part) and I kept posting recipes. The love for the site name didn’t last long though. Truth be told, I’m not much of a whiner really and I didn’t think the name was nearly as cute and clever as it had first seemed (not to mention I half expected a nasty letter from the Food & Wine™ folks at any time!).
So, I decided to make a small change in the name to “Food and Family”, since that’s really what this site is – about cooking for my family and sharing my favourite recipes with you and your family.
Since I was changing my site behind the scenes, I decided I wanted a fresh look for the site, too – one that made it easy for people to find what they were looking for and discover new recipes. I hope I’ve done that. It’s nothing fancy, but I’ve had great fun doing it (I’m just geeky that way). There are bound to be a few glitches in the mix. Do let me know if something’s not right somewhere!
When I decided to make the move, I had no idea what I was in for. I had about 450 recipes to move and re-format. It turned out that each recipe took me about 15 minutes to re-format. You do the math! So needless to say, not all of them are done yet. I have all the recipes from the old site in draft format and I’m continuing to work away at them and will publish them one by one as they’re done. In the meantime, if there’s a recipe you really need, don’t hesitate to contact me. I’ll get it to you asap.
What is this social networking thing you speak of?
I must confess, I’ve been one of those Facebook hold-outs. I blame it on the fact that I have teenagers. It remained in my mind the place for the young (of which I am not ;) I’ve seen how other sites are using it though and I’ve decided that I like it. So I’ve set up a Facebook page for Food and Family. It’s brand new and honestly, I’m not really sure what I’m doing, but I do know that I would love it to be a place for readers of this site and others to connect and share what’s cooking in everyone’s home. I hope you’ll check it out and like it (or whatever it is :)
And while you’re at it, I have a brand new Twitter account as well. I actually use Twitter personally, so I understand how much fun it is. I could use a few followers (a little lonely there at the moment), so if you feel so inclined, please join me. I plan to tweet interested food and recipe items I find in my travels.
And finally …
I just wanted to say “thanks” to all the fine folks who follow and visit my site. As I said earlier, I never really envisioned that part of it when I first started posting recipes here back in 2007. I hope you’ll stick around and say “hey” once in a while. I love to hear from you and hear what you’re cooking or how you made out with one of my recipes.
